Recently, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) held the inaugural Global Livestock Sustainable Transformation Conference at the FAO headquarters in Rome.

The event provided a neutral platform for representatives from FAO member countries, producer organizations, research and academic institutions, development agencies, civil society organizations, and the private sector to engage in dialogue on innovations and pathways for effectively producing more nutritious, safer, and accessible animal-sourced foods, reducing environmental footprints, and promoting vibrant and diversified local livestock systems that are more resilient to shocks and disruptions. The President of China Shengmu and relevant representatives were invited to attend the conference.

FAO supports its members in enhancing the contribution of livestock systems to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). FAO's work on sustainable livestock systems aligns with the four "betters" of FAO’s Strategic Framework 2022-2031: better production, better nutrition, better environment, and better life. Sustainable livestock systems play a key role in achieving these goals.

This event aimed to raise awareness among stakeholders about the contribution of sustainable livestock production to the implementation of FAO’s 2022-2031 Strategic Framework, thereby advancing SDGs at the global, regional, and national levels. It also aimed to share information and knowledge on global strategies and technological developments in sustainable livestock production and to identify priorities for mobilizing and aggregating scientific, technological, and financial resources to achieve a global sustainable livestock transformation.

The conference covered four main themes:

  1. Better Livestock Production Systems: Including the management and utilization of feed and animal genetic resources, animal health and welfare, digitalization, and precision livestock farming.
  2. Animal-Sourced Foods for Improved Nutrition: Presenting the latest knowledge on the contribution of animal-sourced foods to food security, nutrition, and healthy diets.
  3. Livestock Solutions for Improved Environment: Sharing best practices and initiatives on optimal use of natural resources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in livestock farming.
  4. Better Life: Discussing how inclusive services and policies can support small-scale livestock producers in improving their livelihoods and income, promoting more efficient and resilient livestock production.

Additionally, the high-end international event in agricultural technology innovation, the 2023 World Agricultural Technology Innovation Conference (WAFI), was recently held in Beijing.

As one of the four specialized forums of the conference, the World Agricultural Entrepreneurs Forum aimed to integrate the technological advantages of top agricultural universities in China, leveraging authoritative international platforms to create a high-level international forum with high-quality and fruitful outcomes. Diane Holdorf, Executive Vice President of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), was invited to attend the forum and delivered a speech. The forum was hosted by Mr. Zhou Weidong, Director of the WBCSD China Office.

The forum also invited notable entrepreneurs and experts such as Dr. Fu Wenge, Director of the MBA Education Center at China Agricultural University, Ms. Fang Li, Chief Representative of the World Resources Institute in Beijing, Mr. Song Weiping, President of Dabao Group, Mr. Zhang Jiawang, CEO of China Shengmu, Mr. Jiang Yekui, Chief Sustainability Officer at Syngenta China, Mr. Qian Guoqiang, Deputy General Manager of Zhongchuang Carbon Investment Technology Co., Ltd., Ms. Victoria Crawford, Senior Manager of Investment Partnerships and Policy at WBCSD, Mr. Zhu Xiaohui, Executive Director and CFO of Modern Animal Husbandry, Dr. Wu Guifang, Chief Scientist of Agriculture and Industry at Novozymes Asia Pacific, Mr. Yao Weizhou, Director of Sustainable Procurement at Budweiser Asia Pacific, Mr. Anders Haug Larsen, Policy Director at Rainforest Foundation Norway, and Mr. Xu Li, Director of Public Policy and Government Affairs at Starbucks China, among others.
